At Vessagiri, an old monastic
site, are huge rain trees (pithecolobium saman, Sinhala:
mara), which are almost as old as the stone work that they
shelter. Mara trees line the roads and surround the buildings
of the past and the present offering shade to pilgrims who
spread their mats beneath the sprawling branches and rest
their weary limbs.
