Built by King Parakramabahu I (1153-86),
Lankatileke is one of the tallest image houses in Sri Lanka.
The 55 foot sidewalls would probably have measured double
at its zenith. The guard stones, balustrades and walls of
the image house are richly sculptured. The torso of an immense
Buddha statue stands ravaged by the tide of time inside the
image house.
