The Mahaweli river has been dammed and
channeled in all directions. Its waters flow along the road
from Hasalaka to Wasgamuwa through absolutely picturesque
countryside. In the background are the forested hills that
act as the catchment - trapping the rain in the spongy leaf
litter and ground beneath the forest and letting it percolate
into the streams and channels, both above ground and under
ground.
