Next to the national park sugar cane was
planted and an electric fence erected. Yet, the elephants
would wait, lined up in the teak forest against the fence.
The moment the blackness of night enveloped them they would
break the fence and cross into the sugar cane. Finally a buffer
of small homesteads came up and this halted the nightly peregrinations.
Now an occasional elephant waits for a handout from a passing
traveler.
