The excess catch is salted and spread out on the beach to dry in the sun. In a land where refrigeration is the luxury of a few, it is this dry fish (karawala) that is fried or curried and eaten. However, what was once considered the poor man's meat, karawala is also now becoming a luxury because of soaring prices.
