Studio Times Limited is a professional
photographic studio. Its business focus is advertising and
commercial photography and the provision of a quality printing
service to the amateur and professional photographer. Two
of its unofficial aims, however, are the development and promotion
of photography as an art form and the creation of an awareness
and appreciation of Sri Lanka's heritage - that is, its natural,
archaeological and cultural wealth.
In pursuing the latter objectives,
Studio Times maintains an extensive library of photographs
(both in colour and black and white), has held several exhibitions
and published a few books. Weekly columns were run in the
press. These included a photo-feature titled The Island (in
The Island) every Saturday, two features The Islet and Our
Heritage with colour photographs and quotations from acclaimed
authors on Sri Lanka (Sunday Island) and two features comprising
of a photograph and a essay in the Wide Wild World page (Daily
News) and the other on the Environment (Sunday Times). In
the late sixties, Studio Times ran a Gallery which was the
only permanent venue at that time at which artists and sculptors
could exhibit and sell their work. The exhibits included the
work of Richard Gabriel, Ivor Baptist, the posthumously celebrated
Fareed Uduman and the much renowned Tissa Ranasinghe. It is
the only photographic establishment in Sri Lanka which has
long been associated with such activities. All its exhibitions,
publications, etc., have been undertaken on its own initiative
without any sponsorship from the state or any other organisations.

ABOUT STUDIO TIMES & NIHAL FERNANDO:
|
|
|
"Studio Times has been in photography
for a quarter of a century. It has produced several
exhibitions and books not arising out of the commercial
impulses of photography, but through dedication to the
land and the life our country. There is no other studio
in the first, second or third world to match its achievement."
|
- Daily News, 8 December 1987
|
|
|
"Truth and beauty in life, animate
and inanimate, take a lifetime to unravel, another lifetime
to understand, and yet another to capture in words or
pictures. Studio Times and its gifted team of camera
artists have set themselves the almost impossible task
of encapsulating all three in just one span of mortal
life - they have, indeed, come remarkably close to succeeding,
with unsparing eye and eloquent insight for the enduring
images of this lovely land."

- Ian & Roslin Goonetileke, 1987, from the
Comments Book of a Studio Times Exhibition
|
|
| Nihal Fernando: |
|
"Nihal is a master of
his craft. His ability to capture the delightful
play of light and shade is the hallmark of a true
artist. This gift does not come easily. Years
of experience and a remarkable sensitivity for
the wonders of nature and the love of the land
have made him a skilled artisan. Whether taken
in a fleeting instant or creatively contrived
or born of the endless patience of a disciplined
craftsman, Nihal's pictures effectively portrayed
his undeniable flair for painting with light."
