At the ancient archaeological site in Tantrimale
are an assemblage of large boulders. Craftsman of the late
Anuradhapura period have carved two wonderful Buddha statues.
Both are perfect statues, imposing and finished perfectly.
One lies stretched out at the base of a huge rock outcrop.
Another is of a seated buddha carved in a niche at the centre
of another huge rock. Outside the niche, the craftsmen have
begun carving smaller buddhas on the rock. But they are incomeplete.
Tantrimale had been abandoned before they could finish their
work. Below the sprawling boulders is Nelum Pokuna, a large
rock pool, and a little further is an artificial cave called
Pothgula, the walls of which are straight and even. Opposite
the Pothgula are stone foundations and walls of buildings
with steps and connecting stone slabs. Further still, on yet
another boulder is a rock pool with a brahmi inscription.
On the rock face here and there are parallel rows of small
bore holes. Holes chisseled for blasting stone slabs. A jungle
path takes you to three caves. The leftmost one is brick walled.
The 2nd and 3rd caves have drawings.
